Investigation Guide

How to Play Case Closed

Case Closed is a collaborative detective game. Read the briefing, ask deliberate yes-or-no questions, follow the clues, and build the explanation that closes the case.

The Goal

Every case begins with an Evidence Briefing. The briefing sets the scene, but it is not the answer. Your job is to uncover the missing logic: who was involved, what happened, what proves it, and why it happened.

Think like a detective: a strong answer accounts for the important facts in the briefing and the clues that follow.

How Many Players Do You Need?

Most Case Closed cases are designed for 2 or more players. One person acts as the Moderator and knows the full story, while one or more Investigators ask questions and work together to solve the mystery.

Solo Play

  • Use AI Moderator on supported cases when your account has the required access.
  • Play solo side modes such as Daily Mini Mystery, Interrogation Challenge, and Evidence Sorting.

Groups

For larger groups, one Moderator can guide multiple Investigators as they discuss clues and solve the case together.

Moderator and Investigators

Moderator

The Moderator knows the complete case solution. They guide the room by answering investigators' questions with yes, no, or an appropriate clarification, and by sharing clues at the right time.

Investigator

Investigators read the Evidence Briefing, ask precise yes-or-no questions, compare theories, and assemble the solution together. The aim is discovery, not guessing first.

Start or Join a Case

Host a Game

Browse the Case Library, open a case, read its Evidence Briefing, and start as Moderator. Share the generated join code or send a direct case invitation to a friend.

Join a Game

Get the join code from the host or accept a direct case invitation from a friend. Joining a room never automatically reveals the solution.

A Typical Investigation

  1. Read the Evidence Briefing. Note the people, timing, setting, and details that feel unusual.
  2. Ask a yes-or-no question. Keep one idea per question so the answer is useful.
  3. Test a theory. Use the answer to narrow who had motive, means, opportunity, or access.
  4. Request and study clues. Clues can confirm a direction or reveal a detail you missed.
  5. Explain the solution. Before closing, make sure your explanation fits the known facts.

Question Strategy

Begin broadly, then narrow. Examples: "Was the missing object moved before the meeting?" or "Did the person in the briefing know the victim?" These are examples of structure, not spoilers for any case.

Use Clues Well

Do not treat a clue as the whole answer. Compare it with the briefing and prior answers. A clue is most valuable when it changes or strengthens a theory.

Play With Friends

Friends can invite one another directly to a case or use the room's join code. One person can moderate while everyone else investigates, or the group can use AI Moderator when the feature is available to the hosting account.

AI Moderator

AI Moderator can guide eligible solo and group investigations. It is available only when the relevant membership or entitlement is active, and availability can vary by account or case.

It is an optional way to play. Standard moderator-led cases remain available without AI Moderator access.

Side Modes

Daily Mini Mystery

A short daily detective puzzle. Review the setup and clues, then make three deductions about responsibility, proof, and motive.

Interrogation Challenge

A solo challenge for practicing sharp questions and extracting the key facts from a constrained investigation.

Evidence Sorting

Organize evidence into the right groups and test how well you can recognize what each clue actually supports.

XP, Ranks, and Discoveries

Cases and side modes can award XP that advances your detective rank. Badges and achievements mark separate accomplishments. Evidence Locker collectibles and Easter eggs are tracked independently, so finding one does not replace progress in another system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an AI Moderator membership to play?

No. AI Moderator is optional and requires the applicable active entitlement. You can still play moderator-led games and join friends' rooms without it.

Can I solve a case alone?

Solo play is available when the relevant case and your account's features support it. AI Moderator may be available for eligible accounts; otherwise, choose a side mode or join a hosted investigation.

What should I do when I am stuck?

Return to the briefing, identify an unanswered assumption in your theory, and ask a narrower yes-or-no question. Requesting a clue can help when the host or case flow makes one available.

How do I report a problem?

Use Feedback from the Account screen in the Android app to send a support request, or email Case Closed support. Include your device, what you were doing, and what happened.

Need a Hand?
